upgrading gnome/installing packages from CD

I am using debian 3r1 and I was wondering how I could upgrade gnome from its hideous 1.4 version to 2.4. I also have 7 debian cds for 3r1 and I don't know how to install packages from them. How can I do this? Is 2.4 on one of those CD's? Thanks.

ok lets use apt...

first update the apt database with apt-get dist-upgrade -u

apt-cache search gnome

it should then show you all the gnome packages it comes with

btw... have you checked the sys requirements for 2.4?? it requries a lot more ram and disk space then 1.4 (and thats the reason why i havent upgraded)

apt-get dist-upgrade -u doesn't get me any where, it just says 0 for all the found packages, upgraded, etc. Is 2.4 on the 3r1 CD's? I tryed the apt-cache serach gnome but there were too many things to look at...

you won't find gnome 2.4 in your cd.If u want to update, it wont update anything at all as you source.list is same. you have to change your /etc/apt/source.list to testing or unstable. Then try to update.

techrolla 01-09-2004 06:53 PM

where can I find the gnome 2.4?

subh 01-09-2004 07:20 PM

If you want to down load go to "www.gnome.org". I suggest add this line stated below to your "/etc/apt/source.list". It will be much easier for you to install gnome 2.4. then "apt-get update" and apt-get dist-upgrade. Install what ever package you want through apt-get if you are connected to net.

"deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main"

The site is working now. So, you will be able to update easily through net. you can add "unstable" instead of "testing" on the above line to install unstable packages i.e debian sid.

I would, but I can't get networked, I have a wireless connection. I will try lan really quick.

I didn't mean through network. What I wanted to say is through internet connection.

techrolla 01-09-2004 07:42 PM

I know, but my connection is through a router, so I need to be networked.

techrolla 01-09-2004 08:09 PM

well nothing has worked. I had that in my sources.list already, but my network card can't be installed. It says that its busy or something and just fails. Besides, I don't even know which one to install. I think I might just try slackware, It installed very smoothly on my desktop and it comes with gnome 2.4. If you can help me really quick I might stay, but thanks for your help anyways! Plus, I am having crazy video card problems and can only run xfree with vesa in 800*600 with 16 bit :( both live CD's I tried, Suse 9 and Damn small linux did better than that :( I really really want debian to work for me, but I guess it might be better on a desktop.

what network card you have? if u know the chipset, good.
open a terminal in debian.
Type "su" and type the password for root".
THen type "modconf" and go to "/kernel/drivers/net" or "kernel/drivers/net/wireless" to choose driver for your network card.
If it is new card, then you can forget about the driver of that card in "woody".

techrolla 01-09-2004 08:37 PM

I have been in modconf but I tried installing many of the things, but the installations fail and they complain of something being busy. My network card is an Intel PRO/100 VE I will try again, but It hasn't worked before so... thanks though.

GNOME 2.4 seems to be available from the sid mirrors. Try adding them to your /etc/apt/sources.list file, update your cache, and see if you can spot the newer GNOME apts. If you do go from stable to sid, you'll have lots of other stuff that needs changing, too. Chances are that there either is or will be, at some point in time, a back port of GNOME 2.4 to either the stable or testing mirror sites.

I check the http://www.apt-get.org/ site whenever I have problems finding a particular software package that I'm interested in. It usually shows me at least one site where I can get what I'm looking for, whether unofficial or not.

hey, I think Im going to do slackware instead. Im definately not going to forget debian and will try it again when I get a new computer (I have too much stuff on my other os (fedora) to change any thing right now). I really like debian, for some reason it seems so damn cool. But it will have to wait for a little.
