do you have initramfs-tools installed ? I believe this package is needed to be able to create the boot image when updating a kernel.
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/...nitramfs-tools

and wow are you really running a 486 ? if you are running a PII or higher you might want to switch to the 686 kernel. 486 kernel will work fine, however it won't take advantage of the added functions in the Newer CPUs
aptitude install linux-image-2.6-686

Which version of Gnome are you running now? The latest version I believe is 2.18. If you want bleeding edge, you may need to add "unstable" repo to get what you want but even Debian unstable may not even have 2.18 and still the older 2.16.

debian:/home/frank# aptitude install linux-image-2.6-686

Ouch that's just not a good idea mixing and matching repos like that.

gnome-themes-extras
The package has been upgraded and now contains another package inside of it that used to not be. I just saw this issue last night myself.

Just run dist-upgrade to take care of the issue (it will remove the conflicting package that gnome-themes-extras now contains)

Code:
apt-get dist-upgrade
As for the kernel thing - it looks to be solved.

As for Gnome 2.18, its not in Lenny, and I dont think its in Sid either. Might have to pull it from Experimental, or compile it yourself.
