Upgraded Wheezy to Jessie , then "Could not get screen information"

Good day,

I am an amateur linux user and just recently upgraded Wheezy to Jessie without any serious issues.

I decided to put on a movie for the Critters and went to Settings and then Displays under the menu and instead of being able to turn off and on my laptop screen and the output to my tv, it just says "Could not get screen information" with no options available. So therefor the kids were not happy.

Anyway, I am unsure as to how I should approach diagnosing and solving this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE:

I just tried to adjust my screen brightness by using the the keyboard which has built in shortcuts, it does not work. It did on wheezy right after install. Not sure if this is related, but figured I would add it here in case. Also should mention that going to settings and color to try and adjust screen settings via gui does not open the application.

Cheers
