Upgrade from working kernel-source-2.6.7-1 & -2 to kernel paniced -3 & -4
kernel-source-2.6.7-1 worked on my inspiron 8200 w/M50 A12 BIOS
kernel-source-2.6.7-2 worked on my inspiron 8200 w/M50 A12 BIOS -2.6.7-3 & -2.6.7-4 both broke my system at the same point... (Got everything up-to-date w/ apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade *that's how i got the new kernel-sources) Removed linux symlink and renamed (mv 'ed) the kernel-sources to different directories thought that 2.6.7-4 would work Nope: Here is the error at each end... VFS: Cannot open root device /dev/hda5 or unknown-block Please append a correct "root" boot option Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block I have not tried with ACPI disabled as this is a laptop; however, this is a custom made kernel that has gone through very little change since 2.6.2 ... think I had problems with 2.6.5 all boot stuff (IDE support ... ext3 ... support is monolithic) Why am I getting what I think is an "initrd" goof up? After all that tried an make-kpkg initrd or make-initrd, can't remember, but it went through all of the kernel options and replied with nothing to do for "all" So I'm stumped! Please help. Again, I have checked the different versions each time and see no difference that would make me change configurations. Please help! Is 2.6.7 a development kernel? Do you have some place you can post your kernel config? Otherwise I would say try with the vanilla sources from www.kernel.org and see how that goes it may be something screwed up in the patches Debian is applying. And you have made sure that you compiled in support for the chipset on the motherboard along with the file system and the ide you already have.

Its essentially a custom kernel configuration that I've been using since 2.6.2 w/ a few tweaks here and there. For a fact I know that ide, chip support are present. It worked with 2.6.6 and the first versions of 2.7.6-1 and -2, just the support for sun os partitions added for support (ro) of the ufs2 (freebsd 5.2) filesystem. However, that section isn't even in fstab. Hmmmmmmmm. Me thinks u r right about the patch thing. I'm in from g-mother's and will log in and first check to see if there is a newer version. If not, dunno. Oh yeah, I have another installation of debian that includes no X or anything in particular. Very basic. Only for checking out kernels...It blows up there also. Tried it twice, same thing. Even installed an earlier backup w/2.6.6 and tried to boot up after an upgrade to 2.6.7...Blow Up! Same thing. Thank You! Removed the initrd line, formated freebsd's partition (wasn't using it at the time) as ext3, didnt work Tried a fresh install of 2.4.18 stable to 2.4.18 unstable, to 2.6.7 blew up with 2.6.7 at same place VFS: kernel panic: append correct blah blah blah oh well, i think the 2.6.odd #s are development ones even though deemed stable...the debians sid packaged kernel even moreso after the first iteration and the second in this case following all the way into 2.6.7-4 oh well, will be looking out for 2.6.8 (here its got ntfs write support?) |
Well got a fresh pristine 2.6.8-1 from kernel.org expecting for everything to go hunky doory...yeah right!:Pengy: :scratch: ...same thing...Exact same error. unable to blah blah blah, and im booting into 2.6.7-2 (debianized source)
