Upgrade from sarge to etch

Now that sarge is out, I wonder what is the best way to upgrade from my ex-testing (which was Sarge) to the new testing (Etch).

Shall a apt-get update && apt-get upgrade be enough? Or something else must be done?

You need to make sure first that sources.list is pointing to the testing repository.

If you have been tracking "testing" in your sources.list, you don't have to change anything. Just keep on doing "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" (plus the occasional "apt-get dist-upgrade" if some packages are not upgraded due to dependency problems) and you will automatically start tracking Etch instead of Sarge. "Testing" will stay "testing", only the codename changes.

Thanks a lot.

I did a apt-get update && apt-get upgrade, with some errors because of security servers.

But I still wonder: I tried an apt-get dist-upgrade

poalamazout:~# apt-get dist-upgrade

9 upgraded, 8 newly installed, 4 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 11.4MB of archives.
After unpacking 265kB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] n

And it found some packages to upgrade. If I accept, will I be getting sid (unstable) or will it stay etch. So what is the purpose of apt-get dist-upgrade?

This has nothing to do with the command you use for upgrading. Whether you get Sid or Etch depends on what you've got in /etc/apt/sources.list -- if you only have "testing" in the sources.list, then you will be tracking Etch.

Like I said in my earlier post, you can use "apt-get dist-upgrade" if apt reports that some packages are held back and not upgraded due to dependency problems. If a part of the upgrade message is "0 not upgraded" (like in your message), then there is really no need to use "apt-get dist-upgrade". But if you don't mind typing a longer command, then I guess there's no harm done if you use "apt-get dist-upgrade" instead of "apt-get upgrade" all the time.
