Unknown symbol error with azalia soundcard

I am having trouble getting my azalia soundcard working. I have built the modules from source with
Code:
alsa-driver$>./debian/rules KSRC=/usr/src/kernel-headers-2.6.8-2-686-smp KVERS=2.6.8-2-686-smp KDREV=10.0.Custom binary_modules
and got no errors while it was compiling. When I installed the resulting deb package using dpkg I received no errors then either but when I modprobe it, I can't load the snd-azx modules due to unknown symbols present. Any ideas on how to fix it

Did you depmod -a and update-modules after installing the module?

Thanks for your help peter I didn't use do that step I went back and did it again this time using the commands and it still didn't work.
When I typed in the alsaconf command after selecting my card
I get this:
Code:
$>alsaconf
Unloading sound driver modules...done.
Building card database..

Running update-modules...
Loading driver...
FATAL: Error running install command for snd_azx
Setting default volumes...
and it just freezes there.

here is the dmesg out put:

Did you build a kernel with those sources or just install them?

If the sources aren't patched to the same level as the kernel you are using, you may have a problem building anything else from them. How you can find out is outside my knowledge sorry..
They must have had at least make dep using the config from /boot to be useful..
