universal media player

hi

We have Squeeze workstations with Gnome2.
Which universal multimedia player can we use to play multimedia files?
Is it a VLC, UMPlayer?
And which universal multimedia player has a plugin for Iceweasel?

There will be no media player that will play every possible media file - you should use the software that best suits your purposes while minimizing your reliance on non-free software and formats. VLC is usually overkill for most purposes. I believe they all have plugins for the major browsers. On most platforms iceweasle seems to use Totem as the default player though.

If "universal" means play all formats, I believe it is more a matter of having the necessary libraries installed and less of a matter of the media player. Gnome has Totem, which is a good application. So are Kplayer and Kaffeine.

By naming UMPlayer is 'Universal Media Player'. It wont play anything that other mplayer versions wont play.

VLC in my experince will sometimes play file formats that mplayer wont. Even VLC wont play every file format. But IMO if VLC wont play it, you dont want it. Though I have VLC installed on most machines, I tend to use mplayer 95%+ of the time (mostly gmplayer with Xfce).

Anything goes. VLC is really great, you get tons of features in 1 package.

VLC, Totem, gnome-mplayer. But i found that in practice only the gnome-mplayer is stable enough (at least for me - i use xfce, but you might get better results with totem's on Gnome).
