Question Unable to play quicktime mov files

I cannot play mov files anymore, they used to work several months ago with "Movie Player" but I've no idea what changed. I can play other file formats ok.

Sample apps;
"Media Player" (totem 2.30.2-6, via gstreamer)
VLC (1.13-1squeeze6)

I've also installed;
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
gstreamer-tools
gir1.0-gst-plugins-base-0.10

Gstreamer errors;
Internal GStreamer error: negotiation problem. Please file a bug at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug....duct=GStreamer.

vlc plays the audio, but no video.

2.6.32-5-amd64, Debian 6.0.2

Media Info says one of the sample files is "MPEG-4 QuickTime", and interestingly I can convert them to mkv h264 using handbrake (and they play ok).

Any tips on what I need to install, reinstall, reconfigure, etc. would be appreciated.

Install mplayer from the debian multimedia repo, plus some frontend to it like smplayer, and you will be fine.

Well that worked - mplayer and smplayer. Thanks!

"mplayer" was already installed, but when I'd select to play with "mplayer media player", the video panel would quickly open then close without displaying any of the video, but from a command line "mplayer <filename>" worked.

I like the look of smplayer, although I'd still like to get quicktime working in vlc and totem/gstreamer if possible.
