Unable to mount usbstick

I try mounting an usbstick in Etch on a Dell c600 laptop. However I get this strange message:

A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient, see message bus configuration file (rejected message had interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member "Mount" error name "(unset)" destination "org.freedesktop.Hal")
How can I mount the usbstick? Any help would be appreciated!

Edit: I can mount de disk manually. I would like use the KDE hal manager though

I use Mandriva so can not directly help but check out
/etc/hal ...stuff

and hopefully /usr/share/doc/hal

now the messy bit...find out if hal is in your /etc/rc.d.....scripts I don't know if you have bsd or system v....just do a file search in etc for hal
mine is in
/etc/rc5.d/....haldaemon and is executable ...x
