unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

Here's menu.lst:
Code:
timeout 10

title 2.6.3
kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz ro root=/dev/hda2 nomce vga=791

title 2.4.24
kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz.old ro root=/dev/hda2 nomce vga=791
initrd (hd0,1)/boot/initrd.img
Here's /boot:
Code:
vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-2.6.3
vmlinuz.old -> vmlinuz-2.4.24-1-686
initrd.img -> initrd.img-2.4.24-1-686
My partitions are all ext3. I compiled with ext3 support and ext3 extended attributes. 2.4.24 boots fine with menu.lst as it is.

For yucks and grins, I changed the 2.6.3 line to read:
Code:
kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.3 ro root=/dev/hda2 nomce vga=791
(made no difference)

My only guess is that something else is missing from my kernel but what? What is "unknown-block"? Thanks for any ideas.
