Unable to mount root fs

When trying to boot the newly compiled vanilla-kernel, I get a msg saying:

Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs. try passing the root= option to the kernel

This only happens to the kernel I've compiled myself, the ordinary debian kernel (3.0rc2) always boots without errors. I use EXT3 fs, and I have addes support for it in the kernel config.

This is how my lilo.conf file looks like:

lba32
boot=/dev/hda
#install=/boot/boot-menu.b
#map=/boot/map
prompt
timeout=150
vga=normal
default=Linux

image=/vmlinuz
label=Linux
read-only
root=/dev/hda2
# restricted
# alias=1

image=/boot/linux-2.4.26
label=Linux-2.4.26
read-only
root=/dev/hda2

other=/dev/hda1
label="Windows(hda1)"

did you add support as builtin or module? there's way to make it work if you have compiled it as module, but it's easier to make ext3 support builtin.

Re: Unable to mount root fs

You have one image booting from /boot and one image booting from /. I'm assuming they should both point to /boot

/vmlinuz is a soft link pointing to /boot/wmlinuz-2.4.28-bf24 - no difference.

I have compiled IDE support (builtin), so initrd isn't required I guess...correkt?

I also have a sentinix machine, using a vanilla kernel compiled by me, and this error never occurs on that machine.
