unable to login into system using gdm3 nor command prompt

At present I am using Debian wheezy AMD647.0 and I am unable to login through gdm3 nor command prompt.

The gdm displays a round icon continuously and when I try to login via command prompt by pressing ALT + CTRL + F1 the system asks for username and when I enter username as root then it displays no devices configured for root and after that the system asks for password and when I enter the password the system is simply following the above procedure continuously instead of logging into the system.

Previously I have disabled some of the daemons and services and I think so the problem started and I can't remember which I have disabled.

Kindly suggest how to solve this issue.

Have you edited /etc/groups?
If you made user part of nologin group you won't be able to login.

You cannot login to gdm3 as root. You first have to login as a normal user and the open a "root terminal".

Hope that helps at least a little.

If you are not familiar with this it is easiest to do by using the "recovery" menu entry.

Would be very interesting to get an answer to this question.
