unable to initialize debconf frontend:newt

sir I have locked the package libnewt0.52 in synaptic even though while installing other package unfortunately it was installed so I am unable to perform installation or removal of any package.

Suppose I try to install a package foo I am describing what's going on
apt-get install foo
retrieving bug information failed do you want to retry(y/n): n
do you want to install the above packages(y/n):y
reading database
preparing to configure foo
unpacking foo from ....
setting up foo
unable to initialize debconf frontend: Newt
can't find ....
many errors encountered while performing installation dpkg exited unexpectedly.

I have purged libnewt0.52 and all its dependencies using the command dpkg --force-remove-reinstreq
-- purge even no use and the same process is repeating.

Please help me to get rid of this problem.

Hi,

it looks like debconf is configured to use "Newt" as its frontend which is not installed. So I think you need to reconfigure debconf to use frontend that is installed. Run the following in a terminal as root, and select the frontend and priorities of preference (I normally use "dialog" and "high").
Code:
dpkg-reconfigure -fdialog debconf
After doing this your package manager(s) should behave normally.
