Ubuntu or Debian on a cheap Lenovo Ideapad A10 ?

Hello,

I have found an Ideapad for 100 bucks and I would like to run Debian on it.

http://skliarie.blogspot.co.at/2014/...nds-on_24.html

It seems that Debian is difficult to be installed on it, or almost impossible.

Anyhone of you have tried ?

Regards

why don't you just try different distros with unetbootin prepared usb stick, so you can se if it is hardware comaptible?

edit: sorry this may be lame post, can you even boot from usb or cortex processor? it probably has none bios. This is why I don't recomend buying specific OS frendly hardware and than try to install something different.

The problem with ARM devices is that they all have different hardware configurations from each other, so unless someone has specifically written device drivers for it, it probably won't run very well. If you need a < $100 notebook, I would look for a used one.

( 1 ) I have no boot loader menu when I press power and volume +
when I do power and volume -, then I get into a secured mode but nothing clearly has an emergency menu
I have found this video for another ideapad.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KezrMF5CelU
My ideapad is a A10 Ideapad of lenovo.

( 2 ) From Linux on "Lenovo IdeaPad A10? [Solved]" (here) I have read it and they mentioned that it is tricky to make it. I have not seen any reply how to do so.

( 3 ) http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-...t/td-p/1351979

( 4 ) It would be nice that ARM devices such as tablets were not LOCKED! They are using Linux and making money of our work with Android's. A boot menu would be easy to add (e.g. link).

It must be possible to run linux on those machines:
We have debian on arm / armle and it would run for sure. but how?
https://www.debian.org/ports/arm/

maybe below some eventual ideas...

try this steps:

1. First, ensure your device is fully shut down.

2. Press and hold the correct keys to boot the device into recovery mode.

try this key combination:
Volume Up + Volume Down + Power
Volume Up + Home + Power
Devices With Camera Buttons: Volume Up + Camera

3. Release the buttons when the device powered on. You’ll see an image of an Android lying on its back with its chest open and its internals revealed.

4. Press the Volume Up and Volume Down keys to scroll through the options until you see Recovery mode on the screen.

5. Press the Power button to restart into recovery mode. You’ll soon see an Android with a red triangle.

6. Press the Power button to restart into recovery mode. You’ll soon see an Android with a red triangle.

7. Hold down the Power button and tap Volume Up. You’ll see the Android system recovery menu appear at the top of your screen.

8. Select wipe data / factory reset with the volume keys and tap the Power button to activate it.Select Yes – erase all user data with the volume buttons and tap Power.

NOTE:Your device will be reset to its factory state and all your data will be erased. If your device freezes at any point, hold down the Power button until it restarts

Thanks
Alaa

Thank you very much, the kingo android root app did the trick. I was able to use the full!screen app from the play store and got about 1/10 more of the vertical screen space.

I wish the stock Lenovo launcher would support this.
http://www.kingoapp.com/android-root.htm,

Quote:
1. adb start-server
2. adb devices

Check to make sure the device shows up Start the required remote shell session

3. adb shell

i am searching how to boot on linux too
i have rooted this lenovo A10 and set CWM , try some update.zip of my own
creation but i cant start from my linux debian sdcard
i can just use linux binaries in concert with android
xwindows binaries through the xserver android application
this possiblity is done by this script http://jeanmichel.gens.free.fr/etc/install
works only on rooted devices
first you have to copy a debian image on a sdcard with dd

If you want to root your lenovo devices i would recommend you to use search4roots rooting tool. For safe and easy to install root.
