ubuntu goof needs debian question answered

Hi Debian Community,

Here is a question that I'm sure has a simple answer...

I use ubuntu and am about to set up debian sarge on another box. My question is this:

I use gnome and enjoy the native utility that comes with the default ubuntu setup that automatically alerts you when updates to your system are available. This keeps me from having to run apt-get update every week "just in case" there is something valuable out there. The utlility also itemizes and displays the names of new packages before installation so I can research them. Is there a nifty app like this that installs with sarge? If not, is there a package out there that I can install on my own?

Thanks,

AB

I don't think that there is a similar tool, but there is upgrade-system, which is an automatic upgrade command line tool.

Aptitude (and probably synaptic too) will seperate new packages and packages that have updates available. You can look through them before you install.

To update the package list you will have to type:
Code:
apt-get update
at the command line or write a cron srcript to do it automatically.
