trouble with framebuffer in debian testing

hi all, this is my first post as i havent had the need to ask anything that i couldnt find already answered here but i seem to be stuck on this one...

im trying to enable framebuffer in my tty console (the little penguin at boot thing.) im using the 2.6.18.4-686 kernel and im running a dimension 4600c with an i865g chipset. i enabled intelfb with modconf and it would load those modules toward the end of booting and would look okay. anyway, after going into X if i went back to tty i end up seeing nothing but pink vertical lines and blinking of my terminal. im also using the i910 module if that makes any difference. so if theres something obvious im missing please tell me cause ive been looking into this for a while now. thanks alot!

How are you loading the framebuffer, in grub?

well originally i just modprobed it and added the modules in /etc/modules but i just recompiled my kernel and used i810fb embedded into the kernel. i didnt append anything in grub and that booted fine. i even enabled the tux logo too. but once im in X, the tty is unreadable. i sorry if i dont understand your question.

try enabling the framebuffer with grub instead of using modules - i use "vga=792" as a boot option in grub and i get a 1024x768 framebuffer with the tux logo (tux logo had to be compiled in with kernel).

yeah before i recompiled my kernel i appended "vga=791" to grub.
and then the module would load from /etc/modules. though even using that append, i would still get an error screen asking me to pick from a range of resolutions. (i found out that the tux logo wasnt in the default kernel after recompiling.) but now i dont have to append anything and the boot messages are in 1024x768. i just dont understand why once i go into X, that it becomes unreadable. though looking at it closely i can see my prompt flashing in a small square
(resolution conflict?) or maybe there's a conflict between the i810fb option i enabled with something that was probably default? because i used the debian kernel source and not a vanilla one. is there anything that could cause this? do you think if i append "vga=791" into grub now that this could straighten out? let me know your thoughts...

okay, this time i compiled a new kernel, again. framebuffer loads without anything appended in grub, yet still no luck once im in X. (X loads automatically.) any help here would be greatly appreciated!
