System Failed to fetch an apt-get update

I executed these 2 commands today to remove these packages as they are experimental and unstable.
Code:
apt-get purge xulrunner-15.0
apt-get purge libmoxjs15d
The only other thing I performed on my system was using Synaptic Package Manager I installed " chkrootkit"

Did I remove packages that I should not have when I executed the above commands?

The terminal results from my attempt to update my packages is most alarming and I am upset. Please advise-
Code:
root@mock:/home/ztcoracat# apt-get update

Hi,

there appears to be at least one typo in your /etc/apt/sources.list. Please open that file in a text editor and replace each instance of "securuty" with "security" and then try to run "apt-get update" again. I think this may solve your problem.

Hi Evo:

I opened the terminal used nano to edit my sources.list and fixed the mispelled 'security' word-
Closed the terminal and tried to execute:
Code:
apt-get update
I got the same error again and the word security went back to the mispell that it was before I fixed it.

Before I closed the terminal after I edited my sources list I typed and held down Ctrl + O to save the changes-

What am I doing wrong?

Hi,

were you root when you edited the file? Another possibility is that you saved the file to a different location.

What does signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available mean??

Ahh, perhaps there were two typos.

This is apt-key stuff, which is used to authenticate packages. Generally you need a different key for each repository.

You can download a key from a key server and export to a file as follows:
Code:
gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net --recv 85A3D26506C4AE2A
gpg --export --armor 85A3D26506C4AE2A tmp.key
Then you need to feed the key into apt. As root:
Code:
apt-key add tmp.key
Then you can delete the tmp.key file.
You will need to do the above for both the deb-multimedia and the mozilla keys (the example above is for the mozilla key)

Evo2.

PS. there are other ways to do this, but the above is basically the method I use.

Evo:
I want to make sure that I understand you.
I should copy and paste both:
gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net --recv 85A3D26506C4AE2A
gpg --export --armor 85A3D26506C4AE2A tmp.key

And run in the terminal or one gpg at a time?

And by export to a file; Do you mean make a new file and paste the output from the terminal in it?

I'm trying to do the right thing here but it's a little confusing for me-

Code:
m:~$ gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net --recv 85A3D26506C4AE2A
gpg: requesting key 06C4AE2A from hkp server subkeys.pgp.net
gpg: key 06C4AE2A: "Debian Mozilla team APT archive <pkg-mozilla-maintainers@lists.alioth.debian.org>" not changed
gpg: Total number processed: 1
gpg: unchanged: 1
ztcoracat@mock:~$ gpg --export --armor 85A3D26506C4AE2A tmp.key

My sources.list is a mess and I didn't know until I was told that I should not have used the install disc even tho the terminal and Synaptic prompted me for it. This (I think) is why my sources list is a mess.

Another Member advised me to rename it and use the source list he (Widget)edited.
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...el-4175426598/

BTW, I did not indent on these 2 threads to be about the same thing.
I have 2 problems going on at the same time.

This public key problem and it's solution has me baffeled on how to solve it-
You said; I can download a key from a key server and Export to a file-
I did that in the terminal up above but do not know which portion to export in a file and which file for that matter. Should I create a new file and put that output in it?

How do I rename my sources list?
Just open the terminal; use nano and type in the new name of the list?

Hi,

hmm it seems there is a package called gui-apt-key. You might find it easier to use that.

But anyway to answer your questions. It seems I made a typo, missing a redirect.

In my post I put:
Code:
gpg --export --armor 85A3D26506C4AE2A tmp.key
but it should have been
Code:
gpg --export --armor 85A3D26506C4AE2A > tmp.key
This typo meant that instead of the key being exported into the file it was just dumped into you terminal.

Anyway instead of doing it this way it is probably better for you to install gui-apt-key and use it for managing the apt keys.

Regarding renaming files, please investigate the mv and cp commands.

Evo2.

I opened my Synaptic Package Mgr. and found gui-apt-key.
It wasn't installed so I marked it for installation and watched Synaptic installed it.

Hope everything is correct now.

Hi,

what do you mean "hope"? Did you run gui-apt-key? Did you import the keys?

By run gui key; do you mean did I run it in the terminal?

If I should be running that long command gpg --export --armor 85A3D26506C4AE2A.....etc.
than please make it clear that I should do exactly that.

And I do not know how to import the keys; in honesty-

And than run:
Code:
gpg -- export -- armor 85A3D26506C4AE2A > tmp.key ?
Like that Evo?

No. If you use gui-apt-key then I think you should not need to do anything with gpg or apt-key.
It is an alternative.
