Synaptic sources list

Hi

Im wondering how I go about creating a source list for synaptic as everytime I click on the sources button in synaptic I get an error message saying that it has not been created, yet I've managed to download updates and some programs from the main debian site.

Also whats the best way to use apt to install packages from CD and DVD as I still use dial up and dowllaoding large files (such as KDE 3.1) would be a non starter due to their large size.

Answers and suggestions on a postcard please .

I'm running Debian 3 testing/unstable (Knoppix HDD install).

Hi,

you're using an unstable version of debian where programs can be broken or don't work completly as they should. That is why the name of the debian version is UNSTABLE (surprise !). Try to install a stable version of Debian (Woody) to get all things working fine.

To use CDs or DVDs with apt try to run apt-setup as root, there you can add CDs or DVDs to your sources list.

synaptic woody and stability

Hi

Synaptic should work with the latest version too. Woody installation is a pain. Stability is a relative term and woody was built in July 2002. Things have moved a lot since then.

I find Knoppix and Morphix a great way to keep up with Debian and they are easy to install.
