Hell, I installed Debian Via installing linux from the Knoppix live CD, however I do not understand how to log into X as root, I need to do this so I can sae to my hard drives because they're all locked out an' only root has permission to give users access to the HD, I can type su at the bash prompt, but how can I get into X windows? It doesn' give me any choices ovcer who I log in as when I start the comp, it jus;' boots as Knoppix...which has absolutely no control over anything please help, otheriwse this installation is useless!

I'm guessing that by bash prompt you mean a console window. In which case you can't start X as root, 'cause it's already running.

The good news is, you can probably sort the problem from the command line. If you give me the listing of your file, I might be able to help. Or if not, someone else is bound to come along who can...

well, anyways, I can access my fstab file, however I do not have permission to change it, no matter what, *I need to kno how to log into root, this is soo irritating

If you su to root at the console, then open the fstab file in a text editor (from the console), you'll get root access to it, with the editor running through X.

Another possible problem is file permissions being set wrong. Get a long listing of the contents of the home directory (ls -l /home).
