Smile struggling to understand the filesystem

Dear guys,

my apologies to start with as I guess its me...

I just downloaded teamviewer debian package and have two questions.

a) very simple question which I should be able to answer but can't, is where is the download stored? I downloaded 74 Mb, opened the download and saw three folders, closed the window to come back later but it seems to have gone. I looked in home/downloads but its not there. I could download it again but....

b) I am more comfortable with asking this part. I have never downloaded a .deb from an internet site before (always used synaptic to install previously). What do I do with the download in order to install it?

Thanks for any help, I realise a) is very basic and I need to get a grip....

BW

a) This is completely dependent on your browser settings. For example in Firefox/Iceweasel: Edit, Preferences, General, Downloads, Save Files To.

b) ASSUMING the .deb is from a source that you completely trust, and that the .deb is tested to work with your specific Debian release:

Code:
# dpkg -i /home/snowpine/Downloads/teamviewer.deb
(The # symbol indicates root terminal, use 'su' or 'sudo' depending on your security settings; and replace the path with the actual path to your download.)

If you have the application gdebi installed then you can just click the icon in your file manager, easy!

Code:
# apt-get install gdebi

a) if you haven't rebooted your PC yet, have a look in the /tmp folder. If it's there, copy it to a more suitable location. This only works prior to a reboot, as the /tmp folder is in RAM...

b) if you don't have gdebi installed, double-clicking the package will offer you some options on how you want to open the package. Choose "open in terminal" and in case the option is offered "open in root terminal" (or similar wording) is preferred.

Code:
locate teamviewer
This should help you locate the file if teamviewer is part of the file name. May want to check that from the place you downloaded it.
