Angry Stopping exim service

I have a server running exim email server on debian 3.x linux. Exim is integrated with Mysql. And recently, i see a lot of processes that load
exim(exim /q in sleeping mode) which slow the server a lot. The email server is customized to work in webmail, and it seems to have problem sending mail.
Can someone tell me how to turn off the exim service? So that the system will not load the exim.

search for the appropriate config file...it's name varies in different distributions, but I guess it's somewhere in /etc. check out /etc/rc.d and such folders, you should find something..

Thanks for the reply.
I did edit the config file to block(# in front ) the email service loading. But it still loads. Are there other ways for exim to be loaded, such as, initiate from the customized program...
