That's a problem all right ;-).
That is a very old box. Try 'modprobe agpgart' before you try starting X Watch for the error it shows. Also try lspci - here's mine
bash-4.1$ sudo lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 741/741GX/M741 Host (rev 03)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS AGP Port (virtual PCI-to-PCI bridge)
00:02.0 ISA bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS963 [MuTIOL Media IO] (rev 25)
00:02.1 SMBus: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS961/2 SMBus Controller
00:02.5 IDE interface: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 5513 [IDE]
00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] AC'97 Sound Controller (rev a0)
00:03.0 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.1 Controller (rev 0f)
00:03.1 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.1 Controller (rev 0f)
00:03.2 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 2.0 Controller
00:04.0 Ethernet controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS900 PCI Fast Ethernet (rev 90)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV730 Pro AGP [Radeon HD 4600 Series]
01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RV710/730

I DO have an agp bus, and you can see the bus number is different (on the very left) for the VGA controller on agp, and it's integral hdmi device (which keeps wanting to be the main soundcard!). What does yours show? You may not actually have an agp bus.

For the record 2.6.18 is not a version of Debian but rather a kernel version. It is VERY old. You might want to update it to at least 2.6.26 (I think Lenny is running this now) unless there is a compelling reason not to.

What does lspci show?

p.s. mount says unknown filesystem type ?,for anything i try to mount
try cat /proc/filesystems
That shows the different types of filesystems your kernel can mount. Then it's
mount -t filesystem_type /dev/somedisk /somewhere (usually in /mnt/ or /media)
