Squid on Debian GCC error.

Hi,
I'm new to this forum and to Linux. I have been a Sys Admin for a small library for 7 yrs using DOS, Win9x, NT 4, W2k, & WinXP. With all the security updates and viruses being a M$ tech is driving me crazy (enough of my ranting!). I have been working with Debian woody (2.4 kernal) and a Library DB called Koha and it has been a learning experience. I now have been asked to investigate filtering solutions (Library funding being what it is, Linux and Open Source is the only choice). I have installed Debian woody (2.4) and proceeded to try to install Squid. When running ./configure I get the following error:

xxxx:/home/xxx/squid-2.5.STABLE5# ./configure
loading cache ./config.cache
checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for mawk... mawk
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes
checking whether to enable maintainer-specific portions of Makefiles... no
checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc -g) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables.
xxxx:/home/xxx/squid-2.5.STABLE5#

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

which gcc are you using and isn't STABLE5 there on the distr.? ore do you need special features?
maybe gcc isn't installed proberly since gcc -g is (i think) for errorreporting and should work.

I'm running woody (minimum install ie no GUI) I used apt-get install gcc to install it and retried it and apt-get told me that the was no update for it soooo ........(& here comes a bad word) I "assume" that it installed correctly. I know that there has to be a way to check ithe install but I haven't found it yet.

Squid

I want to thank mritch for his/her reply. It just goes to show how much of a newbie I am. I had not thought about squid being a package that is part of the distro. I used apt-get to get and install squid with no problems.........(too many yrs using M$ where everything is separate and costs $)
Thanks again.
