Squeeze fails to install Python-mode and causes issues with root functions

Not sure where to post this, I hope this is the right spot.

I've done a brand new Debian Squeeze install, the only thing I had added prior to attempting to install python-mode for Emacs was flashplugin, I then installed Emacs. When I tried to install Python-mode (1:5.1.0-1) Synaptic opened the little terminal window which said something about 'locked by root' and I should press either q, s, p or ?, pressing these eventually gave me control back and Synaptic told me to run dpkg --configure -a, I did this and it just dropped me back into the same stuck terminal. I've now uninstalled Python-mode and all is well.

Any ideas?

P.S. I've just noticed a related problem, I opened a terminal, typed 'su' and logged in as root then did 'emacs /etc/apt/sources.list, added a couple of things and tried to save, this got me:- '/etc/apt/sources.list locked by root@Eric-deb... (pid 5001): (s, q, p, ?) ?' which is the same error message I got from the Python-mode install failure.

Good grief, my sources.list is now empty, what on Earth is going on. Could someone post a sources.list so I can recreate it?

Help please!

I just opened a brand new file in Emacs and tried to save it, Emacs thinks that anything I open is already in use by someone else, hitting the question mark gets me:-

'It has been detected that you want to modify a file that someone else has
already started modifying in Emacs.

You can <s>teal the file; the other user becomes the
intruder if (s)he ever unmodifies the file and then changes it again.
You can <p>roceed; you edit at your own (and the other user's) risk.
You can <q>uit; don't modify this file.'

I have already done an Emacs reinstall and I've done a restart but Emacs is still broken.
