Splashy is great!

Just a quick note to say that after major issues with bootsplash on etch 2.6.16-2-k7 i've successfully install splashy which works without any kernel patches! WOOHOO!

Splashy is nice.
I prefer bootsplash and - with the notabale exception of no progress bar (debian bug number 382334) - have not had any troubles.

That is frustrating. It makes it feel like nothing is happening during boot and makes the boot feel like it is twice as long.

But I love the backgroung image on my terminals.

Completly useless but very pretty eyecandy.

Splashy and uplash seem to be the direction debian is taking judging by that bug request that I mentioned.

Well, why wouldn't it be if it doesn't need kernel patching, debian does generally try to make things simple. I played around with the bootsplash patch but i'm a 'n00b', and had no luck.

Google. The readme, the tutorials. Apart from installing it there is still quite a lot of work to do. You have to have framebuffering supported by the kernel etc. Go to the website, i don't know the link but google does, there is a faq, guide, etc..

I tried a method i found in ubuntu forums but the boot up was messy with flickering and in several cases frezzes.

I had to remove splashy fearing it might corrupt the boot up permanently.

Thats part of the reason I removed splashy all together. But I love experimenting with new things.

If aesthetics weren't important then their would have never been any motivation for the X-Window system. I really like the way etch looks and behaves, and i think a graphical splash screen at boot does it justice.

To get splashy working on a fresh debian etch install, all you have to do is install it, edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and add vga=791 (i think) to the line that the comments say to, and it will work straight away, at least it did for me.
