sources.list - HELP

Hi I downloaded first two Debian 3.1 CD's and install on new system without problem.

I also added several http:// location more to my sources.list file, but when I checked file it showed unstable ....

deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 r0a _Sarge_ - Official i386 Binary-2 (20050607)]/ unstable contrib main
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 r0a _Sarge_ - Official i386 Binary-1 (20050607)]/ unstable contrib main

in first two lines.
Now I am confused. I am 100% sure I downloaded stable version of Debian. Why those two lines shows my CD's as unstable version?

It shouldn't say "unstable" if you're using stable cd-roms. But it probably doesn't matter as long as you can install stuff from the cds. If you want to, you can remove (or comment) the cd-rom entries in sources.list and use (as root) the "apt-cdrom add" command to add new entries.

You can do "cat /etc/debian_version" to verify that you've actually got the stable version of debian. There's a command, "apt-setup", that you can use to add debian mirrors to the sources.list. And here's some additional documentation you may find useful:

`cat /etc/debian_version`
3.1

I removed original lines and did `apt-cdrom add` but lines are still the same, with unstable in it

Thanks for links!

Hi. I wouldn't bother about the unstable labels on the cdroms. I saw another post that seems to show that all the the cdroms are labelled unstable. That doesn't mean the cdroms are Sid, the unstable version of Debian. Are you able to get updates/upgrades ok from the URL's in your /etc/sources.list? Nigel.aka farpoint.

Yup, that's stable, all right. If you'd somehow managed to install the unstable version, it'd say "unstable" in /etc/debian_version. :)
