Source Directory for Target Kernel

I'm installing a wireless driver and here is one of the installation instructions.
Quote:
b. $make -C /path/to/source SUBDIRS=$PWD modules

Where /path/to/source is the path to the source directory for the (configured and built) target kernel.
Is "/path/to/source" just /usr/src? Do I actually need to have the kernel source on hand in this directory?

I installed the kernel source. But I'm still having trouble with the command above. Apparently I need a .config file. Any help is appreciated. This is all taking too much effort.
