This seems like the same question that everyone else asks, but I think it's a bit different.
I'm using mepis 2004.04 and the sound *does* work.
It works for DVDs, compressed audio files, flac etc.
But not on CD playback.
The software recognises the CD and begins playing it (so that's not the problem), but plays it silently (which is obviously useless).
Check that you've got an audio cable connected between the CD drive you're using and your soundcard - the simple CD player apps (KsCD, Gnome CD) require this cable. And check mixer volumes, too; you might find that the CD input is actually on a 'different' slider - eg, video in, or something like that..
If it isn't possible to check the cable (eg, laptop machine), the other way around this is to use something like Xine to play your audio CDs - Xine extracts the audio data over the IDE bus instead of using the audio cable.
If your running kde 3.3 then you can go into kscd and tell it to use direct digital playback and you should have sound without any problems. I have a system here that doesn't have a plugin for audio on the sound board for the cdrom. (HP). but direct digital takes the sound digitally through the ide cable.
Kevin, the CD works with Windows, so I imagine all the connects are fine.
Jeb, I have seen the Direct Digital option on KsCD (1.4.1), but can't select it.
According to Synaptic, I have the latest version of KsCD, or at least it's synchronised with the repository.
But surely cd functioning is not linked with KDE version.
I alternate KDE with Windowmaker or XFce4 depending on mood.

This looks to be a problem with not having a CD audio cable connected to your sound card. Windows Media Player plays all of the CD's it comes across with digital extraction methods, and thus bypasses the CD audio cable altogether.
I would go into what was said before about kscd and see if you can get that to work with digital extraction instead.

Jim
I use have kde 3.4.1. I've tried this digital playback option in the past with other distros (right now I'm using suse 9,3) and it's always worked fine. I really prefer KsCD over other cd players..but for some odd reason, I don't even have that option! It's just not there. Odd? I even tried compiling a CVS version. Still no luck. Any ideas?
