Sound Server no longer functioning

Hi,

I recently installed Etch but have also had the same problem with Sarge. When I boot into Debian (KDE or Gnome) a message pops up saying someting about the sound server could not start because the file or directory doesnt appear to exist.

I cant remeber the error word for word but the above is pretty close to what what the message is trying to say.

How can I fix this error? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well, if you're not sure it's alsa, you probably didn't use alsaconf to configure the sound card. Do this as root and make sure KDE isn't running artsd on the background (kcontrol).

The sound was working initially, it just stopped functioning after a restart. Im not sure how to check the above as I really am no use with Linux, I have only started using it.

Probably alsa got updated and you need to run alsaconf as Moloko suggested.

It looks like its an intermittent problem now. Sometimes the sound server starts, sometimes it doesnt. I will check the alsaconf, is there anything specific i need to look out for?
