Sound has gone awol

I was running debian testing with 2.6.8 kernel, I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.12 with a simple apt-get install so that I could setup udev and now my sound has stopped working. Dmesg see it as a Intel 810 + AC97 Audio see the sound unit (onboard) during boot up

All my sound apps go through the motions as though they are working but no sound comes out.

If I run ls mod | grep snd I get

Titan:/home/mit# lsmod | grep snd
snd_intel8x0 34016 1
snd_ac97_codec 83960 1 snd_intel8x0
snd_pcm 93416 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec
snd_timer 24644 7 snd_pcm
snd 56260 12 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore 9696 2 i810_audio,snd
snd_page_alloc 9860 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm

I run KDE 3.4.2 (from debian testing bin) and it was using "arts" (I think). Under control panel >> sound & multimedia >> sound system >>hardware tab the select audio is set to auto detect, I can set it to alsa but that makes no difference, if I try OSS I get the following error

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

I don't have a /dev/dsp file or folder

Does anbody have any suggestions

Tim

Probably a bug. Using an unstable version of Debian is really not suggested for normal userz.

I was unaware that there was the requirement of a certain level of ability required to run Debian testing? Yes I am aware thats its is possibly a bug or a broken configuration problem probably linked to the KDE arts package. I have seen several other post mentioning problems with sound after udev has been installed. What I can't find is how the problem is resolved. I am not running cutting edge hardware, software or kernel so if this is a bug in the arts or udev packages then the resolution to the bug\problem should also be out there somewhere.

While your signture suggest that you have a greater knowledge of linux than me unless you can supply a more appropiate reply to a user question I suggest that you don't bother replying in future.

I'm not experienced with kernels, but to be obvious if you're sure the sound stopped after updating the kernel, i.e., it wasn't caused by something else, I would guess it's related to the new kernel. Did you have something specific compiled into your old kernel that could now be missing from the new one? If it's onboard sound maybe that just needs to be loaded. (Shot in the dark.)

The good news is that the sound is now working, to be perfectly honest I am not sure what it was, I went round checking permission, tweaking setting for three days until I got sound. I guess something changed when the kernel was installed ( a straight apt-get install from debian testing repository).

Thanks for help
