Some questions about mounting, default desktopenvironment, ..

Hey,

I'm new here so hello everyone. But that's not why I opened this topic for as you could read in the subject title.
I'm using sarge with kernel 2.6.8-1-k7 and udev but I've a question about mounting a cdrom.
I always have to create my mountpoints myself after every reboot I do. So I've to mkdir /media/cdrom0 and mkdir /media/cdrom1 before I can mount a cd. Is there a way that these directories are made automatically or that they always stay once I made them? These are the mountpoints to where my fstab point at for my cdroms and once I 've made them I'm able to mount cdroms.

Second question: I'm using gdm as loginmanager and my default desktop is gnome, but now I want kde for default but I don't know where to change this so that I just have to login (so type my name and password) and that, if I don't make a choice for another desktopenvironment, I wil start in kde and not in gnome anymore. I don't want to remove gnome from my disk. It used to ask me if I choosed another desktop if i wanted my choice as default but now it doesn't ask anymore. Maybe someone who knows where I can change this too so that my pc ask me that again?

Thanks already,
Sabazios03

Ps.: Correct my English so I learn that too and other people understand it better.

If you make the directories as root, they should not disappear after rebooting. It seems odd. I use /cdrom as my directory, but I think you can make whatever directory you like as long as it matches what is in /etc/fstab

The second part, if you want to keep using gdm, just select kde from the graphical login manager. It will ask you if you want to make kde the default, or just use it for the current login. The other option is to install kdm
Code:
apt-get install kdm
and select kdm as your default manager. You can select kde as the session when you log in. Kdm automatically uses the previously selected desktop environment on subsequent logins unless you specifically select something different. The advantage of using kdm with kde is that you can shutdown the computer directly from the desktop. If you use gdm and kde, you will log out of kde, then go to gdm and select shutdown, then enter the root password to shutdown. I find it very tedious that way.

By the way, your English is fine. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply,

I always make my mountpoints as root and they still disapear but it seems to be that I'm not the only one with that problem http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=276856 .
I will use kdm for the second problem because gdm doesn't ask me anymore if I want kde to set as default and it's more practice to be able to shutdown in kde itself. Now I always shutdown in a terminal bij shutdown -h now or just halt, but for my family it will be easier if they see the option shutdown just where they expect it to be. Thanks and hopefully there is a solution for the first problem too.

Ok found a solution for first problem too (and kdm works fine). See link in my previous post (above).
