Software RAID?

OK - I finally decided to run RAID on my system since I had 3 identical WD 250GB drives around. I have them all hooked up to my motherboard which has more than enough SATA connectors. I fired up the system and see that the BIOS does see all 3 WD SATA drives fine.

I then throw in the Debian Etch Netinstall CD and now my question is does anyone have a walk through that will assist me in setting up a "software RAID" on this system? I have never done this before and would like some guidance.

Thanks for any assistance...

Google is your friend, and so is the Linux Documentation Project TLDP
Direct link to Software RAID Howto, found in 0.2 seconds...

But, unfortunately, the HowTo deals almost entirely with raidtools, whereas software raid in etch is mdadm based. The best source of info about mdadm is the incredibly long mdadm man page. Hard to follow, but packed with useful info. I learn something new every time I read it.

Carlwill: Not clear as to what you are looking for.

If you are asking about using the installation partitioner, then you need to first create identical partitions across the drives which you will then combine in the next step into raid devices. You will then select filesystems, mountpoints, etc. for the raid devices (with will appear on the partition listing) just as you would for partitions. You can also use LVM on the raid devices (except for /boot).

Basically, lay the partitions out as you would normally do on a single drive and then duplicate them across all drives.

If you are asking about strategies for creating a software raid layout, then with three disks, you would typically either create raid1s with a spare OR create a raid1 for /boot and then create raid5(s) for everything else. If the system is relatively slow by today’s standards, then you will find the performance to be even worse with a raid5. Raid0 instead of raid5 is another possibility, but probably not the first one you should try.

If you need additional suggestions, then post a few more details about what you want to do and where you are having trouble.
