i did dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and i have chosen ATI as the driver, but still the problem exists when i am trying to watch a dvd. any ideas?

Ok didn't say dvd use the hdparm command on the dvd drive likely hdc if you see no dma 1 then use hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc of course changing if different to make the change survive a reboot edit the /etc/hdparm.conf as root to put this at the bottom of the file again changing if necessary.

        dma = on
