Slow after update kernel


On my server i'm running etch it was alle running good but the kernel was old(still woody kernel) and i needed an update of the kernel. but since the update my system is slow I installed kernel-image-2.6-686

My server is a Celeron 600mhz, with 256MB RAM i'm running a small website with apache2 and a mail service with postfix and mailscanner

Pls help me get my performance back i need sometimes wait 1 minut until a large php file is load and before the update it was 30 seconds.

So pls help me

The stock kernel comes with a lot of overhead since it has to include drivers for all kinds of hardware and many options you won't need on a server. IMO it would be best to recompile the kernel with only the hardware support and options you need. This should speed things up. If you've never done a recompile before, you could do worse than read the sticky on this forum. A google will also throw plenty of help on the subject.

sounds like DMA for your hard drive may not have been enabled. Check out the documentation on hdparm to enable/check on DMA. If the hard drive isn't working at its optimum speed, this could slow down things a bit with your file I/O
