Setting up a Name Server Bind

Okay I am thinking I need to run a name server. Can someone offer any help?

We can suggest you go to google and look up "bind howto", that's certainly no problem. Please ask again when you have a *SPECIFIC* query about it.

just for clarity; the question in this thread is essentially the same question or another aspect of the same problem in this other thread, where there is rather more in the way of an explanation. Is that correct?

  • In the other thread, it was pointed out that running your own name server was one of your options.
  • In the other thread, it was pointed out that it wasn't the easiest of the options
  • In the other thread, you asked for the easiest option, so it is unclear why you would choose the option described as not the easiest

Obviously, it doesn't have to be the same problem and you don't have to do the logical thing, but I could be completely misunderstanding what is going on here because I am making the assumption that the problem description there applies here, too.

I would point out that the book "DNS and Bind" covers your questions and the answers. Inevitably, there will also be many tutorials on the internet that cover these points, but not all of them will be well written.

Thanks for still have enough patience to write to me. I have been going through guides and I am enough in the dark that I cannot tell a good guide from a bad guide. I looked at maybe getting the book about BIND, which I have read from front to back many times, but it lacked the real world examples I need and I remained confused.

What I am trying to do exactly is this:

I have a domain name I purchased from godaddy. I was under the impression that they do name sever hosting too. But when I talk to them I only get more confused. They say I need to change some details in a zone file on my server.

but anyway want I want is, for example, the domain name www.example.com to go to my IP address. I also want to be able to go to www.example.com:6697 and reach my znc server.

I was going through all kinds of materials and the reason I am posting in Debain thread is the server I am using is debian. I thought it would be best to get tip from debian users, on how to do it the way debian users do it.

I know the debian way is likely to be not much different then any other way, but, I noticed differences and so I thought it best, since I am having hard time, to stick to one way of doing it.

don't run your own server. use a service like zoneedit.com for free.
