I'm not sure...
Debian Woody is stable and it's best suited for servers and so on.
But there's Unstable that will give you a lot of new things to play with.
Updates on unstable can be up to 30 megs in 24 hours..

I use Debian Stable right now , but i've modifeid my sourcelist so that i get a lot of unstable things and backports.. www.apt-get.org is a nice place too look for packages..

There was recently a thread about java support in Debian. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=175321
You may find it interesting if you're planning to develop software in java.

Use testing/Sarge for programming, Woody isn't probably up to date for using python etc. and Sid isn't stable enough. Interesting newsitem on the Debian site: http://www.debian.org/News/2004/20040506

Even is Sid is the only one offering the packages you want, you still should start with Sarge for getting to know Debian in a safe way. If you start with Sid right away you'll end up with problems not knowing whether it's your fault or a faulty package problem. Dependencies can be confusing next to proper configuring.

i aggree with Moloko and i suggest even starting with woody before and as you learn you can decide to choose to deal with sid "stability" or testing aka sarge.
