scanner setup

i need to setup my scanner and i do not have a clue how to do that. i am running sarge with kernel 2.6.8-2-k7. my scanner is a Mustek1200 UB plus, through USB.

Scanners work with an application called sane but you need the relevant backend drivers for the individual scanner. You will find the details of setting up your scanner here. I would also suggest installing the packages hotplug and discover to make your life a bit easier as well. You just need to read the documentation carefully and work through the installation. it can be daunting but a good learning experience as well. I have been very impressed with the performance of sane with my usb scanner.

right, once i install hotplug and discover, what can i do then to install it in my system?

Do apt-get install hotplug discover then download the driver for the scanner and follow the documentation for the driver.
Hotplug and discover make the system pickup usb/pci devices into /dev automatically.
