sarge with k3b, discover1 and gnome-volume-manager
hi
does anyone know a working solution for my problem?
i have sarge, gnome-volume-manager and would like to burn cd:s with k3b (or any other similar good gui).
the problems:
-sarge doesnīt burn with kernel 2.6.8, so i have to load 2.6.7 to burn with ide writer
-k3b setup modifies my burner (chmod 666 /dev/hdc). since hdc is originally
660 root disk (disk is needed by gnome-volume-manager?)
something (gnome-volume-manager daemons?) goes crazy after modifying permissions. cd-tray closes after ejecting and consoles flood the text "cdrom" so i cannot log in.
if i reboot, /dev/hdc is changed back to 660.
-gnome-volume-mounter does not work after installing k3b. maybe itīs 2.6.7 kernel, maybe not. i donīt know.
regular user cannot mount cd in any way, even if they belong to group cdrom.
seems that sarge is totally messed up. either you can burn cd:s or you can use automounter (gvm). not both :/
iīm out of clue & glue on this one. any ideas?

In K3bsetup you can choose to manually set permissions, so K3b won't change them. Some people seem to be able to burn with 2.6.8, but I'm unsure whether or not they have a patch. I'm still running 2.6.7, because I tend to skip a few versions before compiling (timesaver!).
Cdrecord shouldn't run SUID, you can change this by running: dpkg-reconfigure cdrecord
Hopefully this will help you.

The people that are able to burn with 2.6.8 are doing so while logged in as root. This is an acknowledged problem with the 2.6.8 kernel and has been fixed in 2.6.9.
