Sarge CD install question
Has anyone tried installing just from a cd without internet? I've tried it and of course apt gets the packages faster that way but it seems that the setup of those packages is slower? It gets to a package and hangs there for a long time, sometime for about 10 minutes or more on a single package. I'm trying to install with the first 2 cds of sarge that I just downloaded. I set the cd as the apt sources and I'm trying to install from there. I'm using the 2.6.5-1 kernel. Maybe it's something with this kernel that is so slow. I'm going to try another kernel for the install. This is not a good setup here since it is taking hours to do an install with just the base install and a basic X setup. The base install is done very fast. After that I go into aptitude and select packages. From there it takes a couple hours to setup the system with some packages hanging and taking a very long time to setup. Before when I used apt and ftp sources it didn't take this long, but I also used the default 2.4 kernel for that install as well.
Any thoughts anyone? Anyone have a similar problem? How did you get around it? |
what type of computer and CPU do you have....and how fast is you HD and does it have a cache>?

Try this, should work for you as it works here.

I think it may be a kernel issue. I've noticed that running the system with the 2.6 kernel it seems to have a performance lag as compared to the 2.4 kernel. The system seems to bog down a little with the 2.6 kernel when there are too many programs running, the same number of programs with a 2.4 kernel that shows no slow down at all. Quote:
What I want is to get a complete installation, complete meaning all the programs that are a major part of an install, so the internet is not needed or is only needed for a few packages. I want to be able to get a "complete" install on a computer without internet access if the situation presents itself. Which I know a few people who still only have dial-up and doing a net install that gets 600mb or more from ftp is just not practical. With my dsl I like net install the best, but someone with dial-up it's not really an option. |
