Samba won't install

This morning I tried to install Samba on my Debian box using apt (my preferred method of package management). It wouldn't install because Samba-common and three required libraries are broken. I was thinking of just downloading the tarball, but I'm worried that it won't work either. Can I install Samba by downloading the tarball, or should I wait until the dependencies are fixed.

IMO, it is best to wait for the dependancy problem to get resolved. The package management system will not be aware of samba-common being installed if you use a tarball which will be a problem when attempting to upgrade or removing that software; that would require you to do all that manually.

Very true. I use apt to install everything, and I hadn't thought about the update/upgrade issues I might encounter if I do not use apt. Thanks!
