Replacing Ubuntu with debian sqeeze, leaving Vista

Hello,
My system is a dual boot (grub) with Ubuntu and Vista.
I want to replace Ubuntu with debian sqeeze.

Is it safe to just boot from a debian installer cd,
and handle everything during the installation:
empty the ubuntu partitions, resize partitions, install sqeeze,
and let grub take care of itself, ie create a new menu with vista and sqeeze?

Or should I first reinstall the Vista master boot record,
do things (delete/resize) with partitions with gparted,
and finally install debian sqeeze ?
Thanks

Hello,

You could safely boot from the Debian installer CD and let it take care of everything in my opinion. But.... Make sure that you install Debian on the Ubuntu partition. If you can avoid resizing the partitions then avoid it, keeping your partitions sized as they are. No need to (re)-install Vista first, Debian installer/Grub should take care of everything. If you do want to resize your partitions (with GParted or others), make sure you have a good backup (for example with CloneZilla) before you do so. Resizing your partitions will almost surely break your Vista. Good luck!

Kind regards,

Eric
