OK. I have a problem wiht my refresh rate for my monitor. debian decided to make the refresh rate 100 hz which will let me see my desktop. the problem being, at that high a refresh rate the screen kind of rolls over on itself. how do i lower the refresh rate? thanks

look in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

The Debian way is still using: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86, in a terminal. Editing the config file manually has some side-effects (dpkg-reconfigure will not work than without resetting the config file as described in the first lines of XFConfig).

is your monitor section in the XF86Config-4 file right? the values for horiz. sync and vert. refresh are your problem i think. if you know what you do you should edit this file. if not dpkg-reconfigure with other monitor settings is a good choice. take a look at /var/log/XFree.xxx.log also.
