Reconfiguring Video Card Info

I sucessfully installed debian on my computer (sony vaio) and when I rebooted, xorg could not load the gdm b/c obviously i had probably set my video card and monitor information incorrectly. I don't remember my computer information so I really don't want to guess. I was wondering if theres a program to autodetect, and what command I would have to use to reconfigure my settings on the command line and how to reboot gdm (which debian said when i sucessfully completed correct info). I don't have my laptop manual anymore either Help appreciated!

Use dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg as root to reconfigure the settings and I would suggest using http://www.google.com/linux putting in the make/model number to see what others have used for the video. To start gdm after reconfiguring use again as root /etc/init.d/gdm start.

Sorry To double post. I tried looking for computer information on the internet typing: Sony Vaio PCG-F350 in both google and google/linux. Since my laptop is quite old, no website has the information I need. I was wondering it would be possible If i used knoppix or something to find out my system specs?

I just checked google linux your right from the looks of it the ones I seen there only had 64mb ram so I doubt knoppix would boot but you never know with a swap space configured on the HD it just might. If you want to try it with Debian if the Knoppix does not start put a formatted floppy in the drive then use as root lspci -v > lspci.txt then mount /dev/fd0 /media/floppy next cp lspci.txt /media/floppy/ and umount /media/floppy you might also want to cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /media/floppy/ & cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /media/floppy before the umount. Then post the files here so we can look the Xorg.0.log should go in two posts as it rather big do this if the knoppix starts as well for it starting use something like this typed in at the opening screen then enter key knoppix screen=800x600 xmodule=vesa you may just want to let it try and boot first though just to see if it will succeed.

Hmmm I remember I used to have windows on my laptop, and i remember it had more than 128 ram on it (i could play starcraft with out lag and could boot to knoppix before). Being my dad's laptop he gave it to me, so I think he prolly had it customized.

I tried using dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, however it said: the package 'xserver-xorg' is not installed. blah blah blah...

Hmmm I went through the installation normal and when choosing my packages i only choose Desktop Environment only... It should have it installed. Im very confused.

If you hit the enter key when it was highlighted then you did not choose it you need to use the spacebar when highlighted to select no matter to make sure use apt-get install x-window-system or aptitude in apt-get's place if you prefer that then depending on which desktop you wanted put kde kdm on the end or gnome gdm or fluxbox ... depending on which you planned to run. Since your not sure of the video choose the vesa option to get it up and running then figure out what the on-board card is later. Oh and if you installed Sarge then your xorg you mentioned at the first would be xfree so if this is the case skip what I just wrote for now and use xserver-xfree86 in the re-configure again choosing the vesa for driver.

You were right, it is xserver-xfree86, I trited Vesa but the only thing my laptop can produce is a line of rainbow on the very top

Hello HappyTux I was not able to get the txt file yet. But I should get it soon. First of all /dev/fd0/media/floppy does not exist fd0 isn't a directory... I think its /dev/media/floppy and when I do mount it says what type etc etc etc

I tried knoppix. It didn't work. Not because my ram is low (it turns out my ram is 1 hundred something), but my laptop has a power management problem (according to my friend who told me how to fix it, said that sony had issues with the apm and they refuse to acknowledge it) so he told me to add parameters <acpi=off apm=off no-hlt> which it worked with other distro such as mandrake, but not with windows which is why I am using linux rather than windows. But before this problem occurred I tried out knoppix and it worked out fine. But now when I add the parameters to the boot line, the parameters have no effect and just crashes my computer which it isn't suppose to do.

Since I can't seem to get the txt I'll try to manually write down the info

It would be /dev/fd0 space_here /media/floppy in the mount command there is spaces in the commands, could even be /mnt/floppy for the last part. For the type part use mount -t vfat or fat for a DOS/Windows formatted floppy in the command.
