recent debian distro/base files/ net install ?
 

Hi,
I'd like to install a debian distro. I have the woody distro but I have some problems with the old (old but stable, I know...) stuff on it.
Let me explain...actually, I can install it without any problems. But I can't have my network card (d-link DFE-530TX) working. I selected the via-rhine driver at install time. But this doesn't work. (I know there available drivers too but I'll explain hereunder why I don't want to go further in this way)

So I'd like to build myself a recent kernel (2.4.23) and hope it will be supported in this version. But as it my NIC, I'm really stuck by the fact that I can't download/transfer anything...And I don't want to do some transfers like downloading on another box, burn a cd and copying it over on the debian fresh install...I know that I should only take the kernel sources and the kernel headers, but I'm also sure there will always be something missing or outdated (ncurses, gcc...and other dependencies) that will prevent the kernel from being built.


What I actually would like is a kind of base install (as for gentoo for instance) that just installs the base files, but recent ones (latest kernel or so...).
Do you know anything like that, that could help me ? I know about net-installers, or minimalistic bootable iso's but where can I find a recent one ?

PS : I want a "pure" debian...not a distro built on it...

Save yourself a lot of time and kernel-related headaches by finding the right driver for your card, as it's most likely already supported. The stable version of Woody will allow you to install kernel 2.4.18, and many D-Link cards use the Realtek chipset. Try "rtl8139too".
