qt-x11-free

I have had a lot of problems trying to compile a program that needs Qt (kde)on
my knoppix debian system, that why I want to install qt-x11-free from the trolltechsite. and as this comes as a source file (..tar.gz) I wonderded , do I need to remove the qt2 and qt3 related .deb packages first or don't they interfere with the install of qt-x1free?

if your qt2 and qt3 packages aren't working why not remove them anyway?
you can always put them back if you need to..

the extra unworking software isn't needed?

when I try to compile a program that comes in ..tar.gz format , I always get
qt-related error messages, but I don't know if the qt packages are needed for other programs that are already installed from knoppix CD
If I shut remove qt2 and qt3 , what exact packages do I need to remove?

hmmm. did you check for how - to , and manpages with your distros qt install, or at trolltech?

knoppix? never used it, i'll have to try it.. they should have their own pkgmanager tool...

i personally would try to reinstall a new copy of qt from either your distros website or from trolltech, and if it messes anything up, go back and install originals from cd..

repost if the documentation isn't helpfulll.. sorry i couldn't be of more assistence.

I first removed all qt related packages that weren't needed to run other programs, then I installed the qt-x11-free ...tar.gz file from troltech according
to the general install instructions.
It installed whitout any error messages, but when I tried to compile a tar.gz file that needs qt, I still get same error message : looking for Qt .....not found.
Can anybody tell me how to set PATH on a debian system ( let the system know
where ./configure has to look for qt by default)

ps according to install instructiond from trolltech I had to create a .profile file
in my home dir with: QTDIR=/usr/local/qt
PATH=$QTDIR=/bin:$PATH
MANPATH=$QTDIR/doc/man:$MANPATH
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$QTDIR/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

export QTDIR PATH MANPATH LD_LIBRARY_PATH

in it.
Is this right for a debian system?

if you're using bash as your shell, this is fine. some other shells might use 'setenv' instead of export... just check out the man pages.

sorry, but this is not exactly true
knoppix IS a debian system (no matter if run as a live cd or a hd install) with just a little bit added to it (e.g. hardware detection). most parts come from stable and testing (woody and sarge right now) and just a few packages are out of unstable (sid)

solved!
I put the " /usr/local/qt/lib" in /etc/ld.config
and the "PATH ...." I mentioned before , in /etc/profile ,
then run the command : source /etc/profile (as root)

Now ./configure find QT libs and headers.

In your script above you write
PATH=$QTDIR=/bin:$PATH
^^

The '=' should not be there.
