I'm looking to program on Sarge, what packages do I need in order to program in C/C++, python, ruby, perl, and java?

You need gcc, the c compiler, g++, the c++ compiler, a good editor , I think libc6-dev.

For java I used the java SDK from sun (which you can download for free), but there is also a GNU-java compiler: gjc or gcj or something.

You may need some development-packages (*-dev).

Python, Ruby and Pearl: I don't know, no experience.

I have probably forgotten something, I'm really not an expert on this, but maybe this will help a bit.

Odds are that many of the packages you need for programming - particularly C/C++, python and Perl are already installed on your system.

A good way to check would be to write some "Hello World" programs and check that they compile/run.

So for perl ...

--------------------------------------------------
$vim helloworld.pl

#!/usr/bin/perl

print "Hello World\n";

--------------------------------------------------
and then "$perl helloworld.pl" (or chmod 755 helloworld.pl then ./helloworld.pl)

you dig?

Take a good look at the errormessages: if there are missing files, go to http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages. You can find packages here on their content, so maybe you can find the package you need.

I had the same problem, and actually solved it by installing just about everything that seemed necessary, so now I don't know what I actually needed exactly.
