program cpp0 got fatal signal 11
That's the message I get when I try to compile my kernel with "make bzImage". I'm running Woody (stable) after much heartache and frustrations with the .isos. I'm still not sure if the images are ok, but I appear to at least have a working console.
Some background: I upgraded my system to an Intel D865PERL board, Celeron 2.4GHz CPU using 512MB of dual-channel RAM. I failed to install three different distributions for various reasons, the worst of which was the fact I was never able to compile a new kernel, or extract bz2 files. I always got fatal errors. I ended up copying all of CD1 to a partition (the install was crashing when running off the CD), and that seemed to give me a working system. BUT, I have to compile the modem drivers for my system (an Intel 536ep modem) and naturally I'm missing autoconf.h. So I figured if I tried to recompile the kernel it would be ok. Sadly, I can't compile bzImage, and I suppose the modules are completely out of the question. So it looks like my compiler is broken. I'm reasonably sure my hardware is ok (Windows did install alright; in fact, it was the only OS that installed painlessly). The question is how do I fix it? I'm a Linux veteran, but a Debian newbie. One other thing. I'm stuck without internet since the modem is driverless right now. I do have internet access through my laptop which is how I'm writing this in the first place. If anyone has any idea how I can fix this I'd greatly appreciate it. It appears I'm running cpp 2.95.4, with libc6-2.2.5 or something like that. Finally, my computer doesn't want to respond to "shutdown" commands. It doesn't matter who issues them, or how often. The computer never runs runlevel 0 (or is it 6?). The only way I have of shutting off the system is by hitting the power button. My system is pretty unusable until these things get solved. Any ideas? Thanks. -Arturo |

Yep. It was memory. Got it replaced at the store, now all is well. Good thing for Memtest86...
