Procedure to update / upgrade Debian

Hello there,

What would be correct procedure to update / upgrade Debian testing version 4.1.1-13
with Kernel 2.6.16-2-486. I think this version is classified as Sarge. What I have installed is not full version, rather base version, there is not GUI, Internet connection is working. I need to update / upgrade through Internet, not from CD.

I have spent lot of time on Googling. Of course there is a lot of available information, as a well as conflicting, but not any clear procedural way of doing.

Further, when I use

# apt-get [file]

Very often I am responded with:

Recommended packages:
[file1] [file2]
The following packages will be upgraded:
apt apt-listchanges apt-utils
5 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 458 not upgraded.
Need to get 1998kB of archives.
After unpacking 69.6kB of additional disk space will be used.
WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated!
bsdutils apt apt-utils apt-listchanges chkrootkit
Install these packages without verification [y/N]?

I never continued with Y. Would I have?

What would be saved and right way to do updates / upgrades and where to go to get them.

Any direction, please?

Thank you much,

Tom

I think you're actually using Etch, unless you compiled your own kernel (Sarge comes with 2.4.27 as default and 2.6.8 as the highest 2.6 kernel).

What do you want to upgrade to? Etch is the current testing. Do you want to use unstable? Anyway, the procedure is as follows:

1) Change to root (type su and enter password).
2) cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.backup -- this is to get you in the habit of making backups
3) nano /etc/apt/sources.list. Change every "testing" to "etch" or if you want unstable, change every "testing" or "etch" to "unstable" or "sid". Hit Ctrl+X to exit, hit "Y" when prompted to save changes.
4) aptitude update
5) aptitude dist-upgrade

That will give you an updated system. Make sure you either use all testing sources or all unstable sources. Don't mix them. I like to use the codenames "etch" and "sid" because Etch will eventually become the new stable version, and I don't want to upgrade until I feel comfortable. If you use unstable, it doesn't really matter as unstable is always sid. But the next testing will be something other than etch.

Basically, the system is just warning you that you're installing from non verified repositories. I think there's a way around this by downloading a gpg key or something, but I forget...

As junme said, "Y" is okay.
