Problems with apt/sources.list and security.debian.org

Hi

We have a couple of strange problems with apt/sources.list.

Debian was installed from a Testing(Sarge) cd in November or December
2004. When sarge came closer to be stable we changed the sources. list
from testing to sarge, so we wouldn't get any problem when sarge went
from testing to stable. It worked well until autumn 2005, when we
started having trouble connecting to security.debian.org. And later
after we have tried to fix the problem with security.debian.org,
another problem arose.

The first problem is a connection time out when connection to
security.debian.org:
Err http :// security.debian.org stable/ updates Release.gpg

Could not connect to security.debian.org:80 (194.109.137.218),
connection timed out

We can ping security.debian.org, and when we use nslookup it finds the
three mirrors for security.debian.org.

Second problem is this:
Hit ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable Release.gpg
Hit ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable Release
Get:1 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable/main Packages
Ign ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable/main Packages
Get:2 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable/contrib Packages
Ign ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable/contrib Packages
Get:3 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable/non-free Packages
Ign ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable/non-free Packages
Get:4 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable/main Sources
Ign ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable/main Sources
Get:5 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable/contrib Sources
Ign ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable/contrib Sources
Get:6 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable/non-free Sources
Ign ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable/non-free Sources
Hit ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable/main Packages
Hit ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable/contrib Packages
Hit ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable/non-free Packages
Hit ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable/main Sources
Hit ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable/contrib Sources
Hit ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org stable/non-free Sources

It looks like apt is trying twice to hit ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org, and
fails?/ ignores the first time, and then succedes the second try. In the
sources. list we have only one entry for ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org, so
there shouldn't be any need for two tries.

sources.list:
#deb file:///cdrom/ sarge main

deb ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free
deb-src ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free

deb http :// security.debian.org/ stable/updates main contrib non-free

We get the same errors with sarge in sources.list instead of stable.

Have anyone had the same problems, or do anyone have any ideas on how
we can fix these problems?

Hi

Could be problem with the mirror perhaps? I've seen it before, one day the entire debian directory was gone from the norwegian mirror, the next day it was back

Here's my sources.list

deb http://ftp.no.debian.org/debian/ sarge main non-free
deb-src http://ftp.no.debian.org/debian/ sarge main non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/ sarge/updates main non-free

Note it uses http not ftp to get the stuff. Works fine.

Hi.

I'm sorry for not responding earlier, but we have had some trouble with our internet line.

Mirrors being up or down is not the problem. If you look at the log from apt-get update you will see that apt-get tries to hit ftp.no.debian.org twice and the first time it is ignored, but second try it hits as it should.

Our second problem with security. debian. org is now fixed, but as with ftp.no.debian. org wo now also have the problem that apt tries to hit security. debian. org two times.

apt-get update log:
Code:
Get:1 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge Release.gpg [189B]
Get:2 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge Release [22.8kB]
Get:3 http :// security.debian.org sarge/updates Release.gpg [189B]
Get:4 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge/main Packages
Ign ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge/main Packages
Get:5 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge/contrib Packages
Ign ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge/contrib Packages
Get:6 http :// security.debian.org sarge/updates Release [20.0kB]
Get:7 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge/non-free Packages
Ign ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge/non-free Packages
Get:8 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge/main Sources
Ign ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge/main Sources
Get:9 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge/contrib Sources
Ign ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge/contrib Sources
Get:10 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge/non-free Sources
Ign ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge/non-free Sources
Get:11 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge/main Packages [3349kB]
Ign http :// security.debian.org sarge/updates/main Packages
Ign http :// security.debian.org sarge/updates/contrib Packages

Get:12 http :// security.debian.org sarge/updates/main Packages [166kB]
Get:13 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge/contrib Packages [56.2kB]
Get:14 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge/non-free Packages [58.4kB]
Get:15 http :// security.debian.org sarge/updates/contrib Packages [538B]
Get:16 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge/main Sources [1322kB]
Get:17 http :// security.debian.org sarge/updates/non-free Packages [20B]
Get:18 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge/contrib Sources [24.8kB]
Get:19 ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org sarge/non-free Sources [23.5kB]
Fetched 5042kB in 3s (1522kB/s)
Reading package lists... Done
Does anyone know why the mirrors are hit twice? There are just one entry for each in our sources.list.

sources.list:
Code:
#deb file:///cdrom/ sarge main

deb ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org/debian/ sarge main contrib non-free
deb-src ftp :// ftp.no.debian.org/debian/ sarge main contrib non-free

deb http :// security.debian.org/ sarge/updates main contrib non-free
