problems installing NVIDIA graphics driver and SMP
I've just installed linux for the first time (Debian, Sarge) and got a kernel from backports.org in order to get linux to use SMP. Now when I type uname -r i get: 2.4.27-1-686-smp.
My problem is that I have a nvidia X16 Quadro NVS 280 graphics card and when I try to install the driver I get the following error log:
You appear to be compiling the NVIDIA kernel module with a different compiler
than the one that was used to compile the running kernel. This may be fine, but
there are cases where this can lead to instability. The compiler used to compile the kernel was gcc 2.95; the current compiler is gcc 3.3.
... set the CC environment variable to the name of the compiler used to
compile your kernel, and restart installation.
so my questions are now
Is it possible to just change the default compiler to gcc 2.95 or do I need to recompile my kernel from the source.
As I'm brand new to linux any help would be incredibly useful!
